Central Railway on Friday announced that it will run 54 15-car Mumbai local trains from August 15.
According to an official statement, the Central Railway said that it will convert 22 suburban train services from 12-car to 15-car rakes on its Main Line from August 15, 2026, increasing passenger capacity on several key routes.
The move will take the total number of 15-car services on Central Railway from 32 to 54. The upgraded services will operate on the CSMT-Karjat/Khopoli South East corridor, benefiting commuters travelling through major suburban stations.
The addition of three coaches to each train will increase the passenger-carrying capacity of the services by 25 per cent, officials said.
The upgraded trains will serve commuters travelling to and from Ambarnath, Badlapur, Karjat and Khopoli.
Of the 54 15-car local train services, 11 will operate during the morning and evening peak hours, helping to reduce overcrowding during the busiest periods.
Several services will see changes in their rake configuration, timings or routes from Saturday.
- Peak-hour services: Two morning services - Ambarnath-CSMT at 8.27 am and Khopoli-Karjat at 10 am - will be converted to 15-car services.
In the evening, the CSMT-Ambarnath local at 7.42 pm and CSMT-Karjat local at 7.50 pm will also be upgraded.
- Faster services: The CSMT-Khopoli local departing at 10.57 pm and the CSMT-Ambarnath local departing at 12.05 am will be converted from slow to fast services.
- Route change: The Khopoli-Parel local train will now originate from Dadar and operate as the Khopoli-Dadar local.
- Saturday cancellation: The Dadar-Ambarnath 15-car service departing at 11.23 pm will remain cancelled on Saturdays for regular maintenance.
Central Railway introduced its first 15-car local services on 16 October 2012, with 16 daily services.
The number increased to 22 services in April 2019, followed by another 10 services in July 2026.
With the latest expansion, the number of daily 15-car services will rise to 54.
Despite the increase in 15-car trains, the total number of daily suburban services on Central Railway will remain unchanged at 1,820.
Railway officials have also said that 15-car services will be introduced on the North East line in the near future, further expanding the use of higher-capacity trains on the suburban network.
