The sighting of an Indian Marsh Crocodile near Chhota Kashmir Lake in Aarey Milk Colony has surprised locals, with many wondering how the reptile reached the waterbody, once known for boating activities. Wildlife lovers have urged authorities to rescue the crocodile and release it into its natural habitat, fearing its life could be threatened by antisocial elements.
Recently, a photograph of the crocodile resting near the lake's surface went viral on social media. Following the viral post, the Thane territorial forest department was informed about the sighting.
A wildlife lover, requesting anonymity, said, "The reptile should be safely rescued and relocated, as visitors may try to disturb it if it continues to remain in the lake." The crocodile, believed to be around three to four feet long, has reportedly been spotted frequently in the area.
The Indian Marsh Crocodile is found across the Indian subcontinent in freshwater habitats such as rivers, lakes, ponds, and reservoirs. Once widespread, its numbers have declined due to habitat destruction, hunting, shrinking prey base, human encroachment, and rising human-animal conflict.
