The Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation (MMRC) marked the first anniversary of full-route operations on the Aqua Line on Friday by unveiling a passport and stamp trail for commuters and sealing a time capsule that will be opened in 2036.
MMRC Managing Director Ashwini Bhide sealed the time capsule and unveiled the commemorative trail on Friday, October 9, in the presence of senior officials, including Director (Planning) R. Ramana, Director (Systems) Rajeev and Director (Finance) Yogendra Saxena.
The time capsule will remain sealed for 10 years and is scheduled to be opened on October 8, 2036, marking a decade of full-route operations.
According to MMRC, the capsule contains photographs, records, milestones and memorabilia documenting the development and operation of Mumbai's first underground metro. The initiative aims to preserve the Aqua Line's journey and offer future generations a glimpse into its early years.
MMRC described the initiative as a first-of-its-kind in India's metro sector.
As part of the anniversary celebrations, MMRC introduced the Aqua Line passport and stamp trail, an initiative encouraging commuters and travel enthusiasts to explore the metro corridor and collect specially designed commemorative stamps.
The trail covers 10 designated stations, with each stamp highlighting the distinctive character of the station and its surrounding neighbourhood. The initiative aims to make metro travel an experience of exploration and discovery.
MMRC also felicitated its most-travelled commuters during the anniversary celebrations, recognising their continued use of the Aqua Line.
The celebrations mark one year of full-route operations on Mumbai's underground metro corridor, which connects key locations across the city.
Meanwhile, the Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (MMRC) has recorded more than 7.2 crore passenger journeys on the Aqua Line as the entire corridor completed one year of full-route operations.
The underground metro corridor from Aarey JVLR to Cuffe Parade has recorded 7,20,88,738 cumulative passenger journeys, marking a major milestone for Mumbai's first underground metro line, an official statement said.
The Aqua Line has continued to attract commuters since the entire corridor became operational, it said.
In September 2026, the line recorded an average daily ridership of 2,24,602 on weekdays and 1,31,138 on weekends, according to MMRC.
The figures highlight the growing role of the Aqua Line in Mumbai's daily public transport network.
