MMRDA achieves 60 per cent progress on 600 TPD facility in Badlapur (File pic)
The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) achieved 60 per cent physical progress on its 600 tonnes per dDay (TPD) Integrated Solid Waste Processing Facility being developed at Badlapur for Ambernath, Kulgaon-Badlapur, and Ulhasnagar areas of Thane district.
According to an official statement from MMRDA, the project is being supported under the KfW-funded Mumbai Metropolitan Region Urban Infrastructure Improvement Programme (MMRUIIP).
The project aims at strengthening scientific municipal solid waste management across the three participating Urban Local Bodies (ULBs).
MMRDA also highlighted that the facility is being developed on a Design-Build-Operate-Transfer (DBOT) basis and will include a Material Recovery Facility (MRF), biodegradable waste processing facilities, and a sanitary landfill.
Highlighting the focus on waste management, the statement further noted, "The project is based on waste minimisation, resource recovery and scientific disposal. Once operational, the facility will have the capacity to scientifically process 600 TPD of municipal solid waste generated by the participating urban areas."
The authority also stated that the project is expected to reduce dependence on open dumping and conventional landfill disposal while improving the recovery and recycling of usable materials.
The facility will enable the recovery of materials such as paper, plastics, metals, and glass, while biodegradable waste will be processed into compost, and Refuse Derived Fuel (RDF) will also be produced.
Amid concerns over open dumping and improper waste management, MMRDA also expects to address environmental and sanitation concerns associated with unmanaged waste.
Scientific processing and disposal are aimed at reducing odour, vector breeding, and fire hazards, while leachate treatment will help protect soil and groundwater.
"The project involves coordination among the authority, the three participating ULBs, KfW Development Bank, the Project Management Consultant, contractors, technology providers and statutory authorities," the MMRDA statement said.
To facilitate implementation, MMRDA has undertaken regular stakeholder meetings and reviews, phased site development, facilitation of statutory approvals and removal of legacy waste. The authority has also coordinated controlled blasting, supporting infrastructure development, and the procurement and installation of equipment.
MMRDA further stated, "We are maintaining regular engagement with KfW Development Bank to ensure compliance with applicable environmental, social and governance requirements."
The facility is intended to support a circular economy by recovering materials from municipal waste and reducing the need for virgin raw materials.
"Scientific processing of biodegradable waste could also help reduce methane emissions associated with unmanaged waste disposal," said the statement.
The project is expected to generate direct and indirect employment during its construction and operational phases. It also aims to provide more organised and safer livelihood opportunities for informal waste pickers by integrating them into the formal waste management system.
MMRDA further said that the facility, once completed, will strengthen regional recycling activities and contribute to cleaner and more sustainable urban development in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.
