Central Railway (CR) on Friday said its suburban train services on the Main, Harbour, and Trans-Harbour corridors continued to operate despite extremely heavy rainfall across Mumbai and its suburbs over the past 48 hours.
According to a press release issued by Central Railway, several parts of the suburban network recorded heavy rainfall during the period.
Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) received around 150 mm of rain, while the Dadar-Ghatkopar stretch recorded between 120 mm and 150 mm. Mulund received more than 160 mm of rainfall.
Among the suburban locations, Thane recorded 284 mm of rainfall and Kalva received 270 mm. The Harbour line section between Vashi and Panvel recorded more than 200 mm of rainfall.
On the Main line, the Kalyan-Karjat/Khopoli section received around 150 mm of rainfall, while the Kalyan-Kasara section recorded more than 200 mm.

The railway attributed the smooth operations to advance monsoon preparedness, continuous field monitoring, and coordination among its engineering, operating, electrical, signal and telecom departments, along with civic authorities.
According to the Central Railway, monsoon preparations focused on preventing waterlogging, strengthening drainage infrastructure, and protecting vulnerable locations across the network.
As part of these measures, the railway deployed 210 heavy-duty dewatering pumps with capacities ranging from 12.5 HP to 100 HP at 117 waterlogging-prone locations where water levels are susceptible to rising above rail level during intense rainfall.
Central Railway also identified 18 major flood-prone locations, including Sion-Kurla, Chunabhatti-Kurla, Vikhroli-Kanjurmarg Road, and Kurla-Tilaknagar, for targeted engineering interventions through temporary as well as permanent solutions.
The railway said the Thane Microtunnelling Project has addressed the long-standing flooding issue at Thane station, where water previously rose above rail level during heavy rainfall. It added that bridge rehabilitation and waterway augmentation works were also undertaken to further improve drainage across the network.
Other monsoon preparedness measures included desilting of side drains and catch-water drains, cleaning of culverts, track maintenance and lifting at vulnerable locations, tunnel inspections, leak-proofing of station platforms and railway buildings, and deployment of monsoon patrolmen in sensitive sections.
Central Railway also said it regularly shared monsoon-related updates on social media to help passengers plan their journeys.
The railway acknowledged the efforts of its frontline staff, including track maintainers, gangmen, permanent way staff, motormen, train managers, engineers and personnel from various departments, for working through adverse weather conditions to ensure uninterrupted suburban services.
