Heavy monsoon showers continued to lash Mumbai on Friday, with the city recording substantial rainfall across all three civic regions, even as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) upgraded its weather warning to a red alert for Mumbai, Thane, and Palghar for the weekend.
According to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), the average rainfall recorded between 8 am and 9 pm stood at 73 mm in the island city, 61 mm in the eastern suburbs, and 58 mm in the western suburbs, indicating widespread rainfall across the metropolis.

Earlier on Friday, the weather department had placed Mumbai, Thane, Palghar, and Raigad under an orange alert before upgrading the warning. It also said heavy rainfall on Friday could be accompanied by gusty winds with speeds reaching 50-60 kmph, and advised residents to remain cautious.
Mumbai has already been witnessing persistent rainfall over the past several days. According to IMD and BMC data, the city and its suburbs received 117.06 mm of rainfall during the 24-hour period ending 8 am on Friday.
Among the highest rainfall stations during the period were Mandavi Fire Station (150.2 mm), Malabar Hill (145.8 mm), B Ward Office (140.8 mm), Memonwada Fire Station (140.2 mm), and the Municipal Head Office (139.2 mm).
In the western suburbs, Malpa Dongari Municipal School in Andheri recorded the highest rainfall at 136.6 mm, followed by K-East Ward Office (134.6 mm), Versova WWTF and Lagoons (129.4 mm), Versova Pumping Station (128.8 mm), and Andheri Fire Station (128.6 mm).
Neighbouring Thane also continued to receive rain during the day.
According to the Regional Disaster Management Cell (RDMC) of the Thane Municipal Corporation, the city received 28.17 mm of rainfall between 8.30 am and 5.30 pm on Friday, with the highest hourly rainfall of 17.02 mm recorded between 10.30 am and 11.30 am. The city's cumulative seasonal rainfall has now reached 715.04 mm, compared to 898.13 mm during the corresponding period last year.
Authorities have urged residents in Mumbai and neighbouring districts to avoid unnecessary travel, stay away from waterlogged areas and follow official weather advisories as heavy rainfall is expected to continue through the weekend.
