A portion of an old building undergoing demolition collapsed in Byculla (West) on Friday night. The unfortunate incident triggered the authorities to halt the ongoing work and implement additional safety measures.
According to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation's (BMC) Mumbai Fire Brigade (MFB), the incident was reported at around 9:36 pm on June 19. The building that partially collapsed is located at Sundar Gully on Hans Road, beside Dagadi Chawl in Byculla (West).
As per the officials, a section of the second floor of the vacant ground-plus-two-storey (G+2) structure collapsed onto the first floor. While the incident could have been a big tragedy, no injuries were reported, and the authorities are continuing to monitor the site to ensure public safety and prevent any further mishaps.
A subsequent update from the ward control room clarified that the building had already been declared a C1 category dangerous structure by the MHADA department and was undergoing demolition.
During the demolition process, a part of the building's wall gave way and collapsed onto the roadside. Officials further confirmed that the structure was vacant at the time of the incident, preventing any loss of life or injuries.
Following the collapse, the contractor immediately stopped the demolition work. Civic authorities have directed that adequate safety measures be put in place before any further demolition activity is undertaken.
