The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) will conduct a special e-waste collection drive at its headquarters on October 22, asking all departments to identify and hand over unused, faulty and obsolete electronic and electrical equipment for scientific disposal.

The initiative is being organised under Special Campaign 6.0, in accordance with guidelines issued by the Centre's Department of Administrative Reforms and Public Grievances (DARPG) and the Ministry of Mines. The campaign also focuses on waste segregation under the Solid Waste Management Rules, 2026.

NMMC departments asked to prepare e-waste inventories

Additional Municipal Commissioner Sunil Pawar has issued instructions to all civic departments through the Solid Waste Management Department, directing them to collect obsolete equipment from the NMMC headquarters, offices and establishments under the corporation's jurisdiction.

Departments must prepare detailed, item-wise inventories mentioning the name and quantity of each item, its condition, the asset number, if available, and the name of the concerned department.

The collection will cover computers, monitors, printers, scanners, keyboards, mice, uninterruptible power supplies (UPS), batteries, electrical appliances, telephone sets, networking equipment and other electronic items.

Approval mandatory before disposing of civic equipment

Departments have been instructed to initiate separate procedures under the applicable rules for equipment that needs to be written off from official records. No government property can be handed over for disposal without approval from the competent authority, the instructions state.

The collected e-waste will be deposited at a location designated by the Solid Waste Management Department on October 22.

Civic employees can contribute household e-waste

NMMC officers and employees can also voluntarily deposit electronic waste from their homes as part of the drive.

Accepted items include black-and-white and colour televisions, LCD, LED and plasma TVs, air conditioners of 1-tonne and 1.5-tonne capacities, desktop computers, laptops, printers, keyboards, mice, toner cartridges, RAM and other computer components.

Mobile phones, smartphones, feature phones, refrigerators, washing machines, microwave ovens and dishwashers can also be submitted.

Other items covered under the drive include fans, geysers, stabilisers, UPS units, heaters, toasters, mixer-grinders, induction cooktops, tape recorders, radios, speakers, video cassette recorders (VCRs), DVD players and routers.

The civic body aims to ensure that the collected electronic waste is disposed of scientifically to prevent environmental damage caused by discarded electrical and electronic equipment.
