As per the statement, Maria was approached by Lalit Modi's advocate while attending a press conference in July in London.

The statement released by Mumbai Police Spokesperson Dhananjay Kulkarni, says that Modi was facing a death threat from the underworld, which is why Maria met him.

The meeting lasted for 20 minutes. Maria asked Modi to approach him in Mumbai. Maria then wrote to then (late) home minister RR Patil and chief secretary about the meeting.

Modi is being investigated under the Enforcement Directorate for Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA) violations.
