Two passengers were booked after allegedly assaulting and abusing an on-duty Central Railway ticket-checking staff member at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) in Mumbai on October 25, after they were asked to produce valid travel tickets or proof of railway employment.

According to Central Railway, the incident took place between 6.55 pm and 7 pm in the concourse area near Platforms 5 and 6, where ticket-checking staff member Jignesh Vasantlal Bhavsar was performing his duties.

Male passenger allegedly claims to be railway employee

During routine ticket checking, Bhavsar approached a male and a female passenger to verify their journey tickets. The male passenger allegedly claimed to be a railway employee. However, when asked to produce his railway identity card or other valid proof of employment, he allegedly refused and attempted to flee.

Central Railway said the man physically assaulted Bhavsar when the ticket checker attempted to stop him. The female passenger also allegedly abused and manhandled the railway employee.

RPF staff intervene, FIR registered against duo

With the assistance of Railway Protection Force (RPF) personnel and other railway staff, both passengers were taken to the Railway Police Station at CSMT.

The two passengers were identified as Rishikesh Sanjay Pawar, 24, and Nikita Rishikesh Pawar, 23. According to Central Railway, neither could establish their claim of being railway employees or produce valid travel authority.

The passengers were subsequently handed over to the Government Railway Police (GRP), and a first information report (FIR) was registered against both in connection with the alleged assault and related offences.

The case has been registered under Sections 137, 138 and 145 of the Railways Act, 1989, and Sections 132, 115(2) and 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), according to the press release issued by Central Railway on Tuesday.

Central Railway appeals to passengers to cooperate

Following the incident, Central Railway reiterated that ticket checking is essential to ensure authorised travel and protect the interests of genuine passengers.

The railway administration has urged passengers to cooperate with ticket-checking staff and other railway personnel while they perform their duties. Those claiming railway employment or travel concessions must produce valid documentary proof when asked by authorised staff.

Central Railway also warned that violence, misbehaviour or obstruction of railway employees on duty would be taken seriously and dealt with in accordance with the law. The administration said it remains committed to ensuring the safety and dignity of its employees and maintaining discipline across railway premises.
