The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has urged residents in parts of Mumbai, the eastern suburbs and areas of Thane and Bhiwandi supplied by the civic body to boil and filter drinking water for the next seven days as a precautionary measure.

The advisory comes after repair work on Compartment No 2 of the Yewai balancing reservoir at the Pise-Panjrapur complex was completed. The compartment is scheduled to be commissioned on Wednesday, October 28.

According to the BMC, the commissioning process could potentially affect the quality of water supplied to Mumbai city, the eastern suburbs and parts of Thane and Bhiwandi that receive water through the civic body. Residents in the affected areas have therefore been advised to boil and filter drinking water for the next seven days.

Thane water cut on October 28-29: Check areas affected by 24-hour shutdown

The Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) will implement a 10 per cent water cut across its jurisdiction every Wednesday as part of precautionary measures to manage available water stocks amid concerns over the potential impact of El Nino and the possibility of drought-like conditions.

Under the revised water management plan, supply will be suspended in several parts of Thane for 24 hours, from 9 am on Wednesday to 9 am on Thursday. The measure will be implemented through the civic body's own water supply network and STEM Water Distribution and Infrastructure Company Pvt Ltd.

The decision follows a state government directive requiring local authorities to manage available water resources carefully and prioritise drinking water supplies amid concerns over changing weather conditions. The state government's resolution calls for planned and judicious use of water stocks across Maharashtra until August 31, 2027.

The first scheduled shutdown will begin at 9 am on Wednesday, October 28, and continue until 9 am on Thursday, October 29. Several residential and commercial areas are expected to be affected by the disruption.

The affected areas include Ghodbunder Road, Lokmanya Nagar, Vartak Nagar, Saket, Rutu Park, Jail, Gandhi Nagar, Rustomjee, Siddhachal, Indira Nagar, Rupadevi, Shree Nagar, Samata Nagar, Siddheshwar, Eternity, Johnson, Mumbra and parts of Kalwa, among other locations.

Residents in these areas may face interruptions to their regular water supply during the shutdown period. Households and establishments that depend on the municipal network will need to plan their water use accordingly.

The civic body has advised residents to make arrangements in advance and use stored water carefully to minimise inconvenience during the scheduled disruption.
