A late-night domestic quarrel in Dharavi turned violent after a police constable was allegedly assaulted while trying to defuse the situation. The injured policeman was later treated, while a 29-year-old man was arrested, police said.
The incident occurred around 2.07 am on Thursday, December 25, at Sangram Nagar in the PMG Colony area. Police said they received a distress call stating that a woman and her husband were being assaulted by her brother-in-law during a heated family dispute.
Acting on the alert, complainant Narayan Appa Dadas, 46, a Bit Marshal attached to Dharavi police station, rushed to the spot with a colleague. Upon arrival, the officers found the accused, Johnson Saloman Kollur, engaged in a heated argument with his sister-in-law, Gauri Steven Kollur.
Police said that when the officers tried to intervene and calm the situation, Kollur allegedly lost his temper and turned violent. He allegedly grabbed one of the policemen and began assaulting him. When Dadas stepped in to rescue his colleague and restrain the accused, Kollur allegedly punched him on the forehead, pushed him to the ground, and kicked his right hand, causing injuries.
The injured constable was later provided medical treatment. "The accused went berserk and attacked the policemen who were trying to restore peace. He deliberately obstructed government servants while on duty," a police officer said.
Following the incident, Kollur allegedly fled to his residence in the same locality. He was later arrested from by the detection staff. Preliminary checks revealed that the accused has no prior criminal record, police said.
