The Mumbai Police's Crime Branch Unit 6 has arrested a 49-year-old history-sheeter who was wanted in an extortion case registered at Kandivali Police Station.

According to crime branch sources, the accused, identified as Umar Salim Khan, is a resident of Laljipada in Kandivali (West). He was apprehended while hiding under a false identity in a densely populated locality in Shivajinagar, Govandi.

"Karim Gafur Bagwan (41), a ride operator at a local fairground and a resident of Ganesh Society near Rahmat Masjid, Kandivali West, filed a complaint alleging that Khan and his associate had demanded an extortion of Rs 50,000 to allow him to operate his business. When he refused, the accused reportedly threatened him with a knife and attacked his brother Sikandar with a cement block and assaulted him.

On the basis of the complaint filed by Bagwan, a case was registered under the relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and Arms Act for extortion, as well as the Mumbai Police Act in Kandivali Police Station last month.

"Acting on a tip-off, in-charge Police Inspector Bharat Ghone of Unit 6, Chembur, along with his team, located Khan in Plot No 25, Shivajinagar, where he was living under an alias. A meticulous search operation in the densely populated slum led to his arrest," said an officer.

During interrogation, Khan allegedly confessed to the extortion attempt on June 13 in Laljipada Ground in Kandivali, along with an associate, identified as Asif Shaikh.

Khan has 27 cases previously registered against him, including those of housebreaking, robbery, armed assault, attempt to murder, and criminal intimidation. He also has allegedly violated provisions under the Arms Act and Mumbai Police Act multiple times.

Many of these cases have been registered at Kandivali Police Station, with one case from 2013 resulting in a conviction by a court.

Khan was handed over to Kandivali Police for further investigation and legal proceedings.

"We received confidential information about the accused hiding in Shivajinagar. Our team conducted a swift and intelligent operation and arrested him successfully. He has a long history of serious crimes, and his arrest is a major relief for the victims and the community," said Ghone.
