The Mumbai Police has tightened security across neighbourhoods ahead of Independence Day celebrations, with routine nakabandis, patrolling, and combing operations being stepped up to keep a watch on suspicious persons, vehicles and activities.
The heightened security is not limited to major venues. Police teams are also keeping an eye on isolated spots, roadside parking areas, markets, hotels, lodges, and other places where suspicious activity or movement could go unnoticed. The focus on parked vehicles and isolated locations is part of the precautionary security exercise being undertaken before and during the celebrations.
A similar security arrangement has been put in place in Chembur East Zone. As part of the Independence Day measures, 20 police officers and 30 police personnel will be deployed for nakabandi and security duties. Apart from the main roads, police teams will keep a watch on isolated locations, market areas, lodges, hotels and parking lots, looking for suspicious activity.
In Dongri, the entire strength of the police station will be deployed for Independence Day security, with special arrangements being made around the march-past and flag-hoisting ceremony. "We are making elaborate security arrangements, including the march-past and flag-hoisting ceremony. The entire strength of Dongri police station will be deployed to ensure no untoward incident takes place," said Sagar Tilekar, senior police inspector, Dongri police.
The security net is also being tightened across Mumbai's railway network, with the GRP maintaining a heightened watch at railway stations on the eve of Independence Day. All major stations have been placed under tight security, with random checks of passengers entering and leaving stations being carried out as a precautionary measure. Police are keeping a close watch on crowded locations.
CSMT - one of the city's key railway stations - has seen additional police deployment at several points. Security personnel are maintaining a watch across the station premises and platforms.
Police are also conducting detailed checks of platforms and station premises with the assistance of dog squads. The additional deployment is aimed at ensuring the safety of commuters and detecting any suspicious object or activity.
A major combing operation was carried out by Sion police on Friday, with more than 100 police officers and personnel deployed across the entire jurisdiction. During the operation, teams checked vehicles parked suspiciously along roadsides and searched suspicious persons and vehicles. The operation was conducted under the guidance of ACP Mahendra More and led by Senior Inspector Sarita Tawade of Sion police.
