Mumbai rail expansion: Kalyan-Badlapur 3rd, 4th lines project reaches 52 per cent progress; completion targeted for 2028

The Kalyan-Badlapur 3rd and 4th Line Project under the Mumbai Urban Transport Project-3A (MUTP-3A) has achieved 52 per cent physical progress, the Mumbai Railway Vikas Corporation (MRVC) said on Sunday.

The project, sanctioned at a cost of Rs 1,510 crore, is a major capacity augmentation project on Central Railway and is targeted for completion in 2028.

The project is aimed at easing congestion and improving operational fluidity on the Central Railway suburban network. The alignment has been finalised, with General Arrangement Drawings (GADs) for all five stations - Vitthalwadi, Ulhasnagar, Ambernath, Chikhloli and Badlapur - approved. Designs for all road overbridges (ROBs) and the required technical approval drawings have also been cleared.

Significant progress has been achieved across the corridor, MRVC stated. Thirty-one bridges have been completed, while work on the remaining bridges is progressing. Around 1.60 lakh cubic metres of earthwork has also been completed.

Among the major road overbridges (ROBs), those at LC-1A and MIDC have been completed and commissioned. Work on the ROBs at LC-4/C and LC-7 is progressing substantially, while the MIDC pipeline bridge was completed and handed over to MIDC in March 2026.

At Chikhloli station, civil works for the station and service buildings are substantially complete, barring painting. Work on three foot overbridges (FOBs), the cover over platform (COP), platforms, approach road and associated infrastructure is progressing. Around 500 metres of reinforced cement concrete (RCC) platform wall has also been completed.

Platform extension works along with COP at Vitthalwadi, Ulhasnagar, and Ambernath have been completed. Railway route relay interlocking (RRI) and other associated building works are progressing, while signalling and telecommunications (S&T) rooms at these stations have already been handed over.

Two FOBs at Ulhasnagar have also reached an advanced stage, with all 29 girders launched and deck slabs cast.

Sunil G Udasi, Chief Manager (Corporate Coordination) of MRVC, said, "On completion, the additional lines will substantially enhance rail capacity on the Kalyan-Badlapur section, improve operational flexibility and facilitate smoother movement of suburban as well as long-distance services on this busy Central Railway corridor."
