Amid the continuous spell of intense rain across Mumbai and its surrounding areas, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for Mumbai, Thane, and surrounding areas for Saturday and Sunday.
The weather forecasting agency, while issuing the warning, highlighted heavy to very heavy rainfall at a few places, with extremely heavy rainfall likely at isolated locations.
IMD has also forecast occasional gusty winds reaching speeds of 50-60 kmph, increasing the risk of tree falls, waterlogging, and traffic disruptions.
Mumbai received significant rainfall over the past 24 hours. As per the officials from the BMC, the island city in the last 24 hours has recorded 99 mm of rainfall. On the other hand, eastern suburbs recorded 98 mm of rainfall, while the rainfall at western suburbs stood at 94 mm.
Among observatories, the Colaba station recorded 90.2 mm of rainfall with a minimum temperature of 24.2 degrees Celsius, while the Santacruz observatory recorded 109.6 mm of rainfall and a minimum temperature of 23.5 degrees Celsius.
Meanwhile, neighboring Thane also witnessed significant rainfall over the past 24 hours. According to official data, the city recorded 77.18 mm of rainfall on Friday, taking the cumulative rainfall for the season to 764.05 mm. During the corresponding period last year, Thane had received 898.13 mm of rainfall, indicating that this year's cumulative monsoon rainfall remains lower than 2025 despite the recent heavy spells.
Adding to the concern, the city is expected to witness a high tide of 4.26 meters at 2.50 pm on Friday, raising the possibility of flooding in low-lying coastal areas if heavy rainfall coincides with the high tide. The next high tide is expected at 2.52 am on Saturday, measuring 3.60 meters. The low tides are scheduled at 8.56 pm on Friday (1.66 meters) and 8.22 am on Saturday (1.28 meters).
Civic authorities and disaster management teams have been placed on alert, with emergency response units monitoring vulnerable locations across the city. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has urged citizens to follow official weather advisories and avoid unnecessary travel as the intense monsoon activity is expected to continue through the weekend.
