The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has issued a safety advisory for all construction sites in Mumbai amid the prevailing weather conditions, with wind speeds reaching 70 to 80 kmph.

The civic body has directed developers, architects, licensed surveyors, contractors, project managers and site engineers to take immediate precautionary measures to prevent accidents and ensure the safety of workers, nearby residents and the general public.

According to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation, all scaffolding, loose construction materials, crane components, sheets installed around compound walls, formwork and temporary structures at construction sites must be thoroughly inspected. The civic body has instructed those responsible for construction sites to ensure that such structures remain stable and properly secured during adverse weather conditions.

Loose materials on elevated areas must be secured

The BMC said loose materials placed on upper floors, terraces and other elevated platforms must either be removed or firmly secured to avoid any risk during strong winds.

The civic body further directed that construction activities should not be carried out in an unplanned or unsafe manner. It stated that all work at construction sites must be properly planned, supervised and executed in a systematic way to minimise risks.

According to the advisory, excavated construction sites must also be properly protected and monitored closely to avoid any untoward incidents during the ongoing weather conditions.

Crane operations and work at heights to be reviewed

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation has asked construction site authorities to inspect tower cranes, material hoists, safety nets and lifting equipment to ensure their stability.

The civic body stated that lifting operations and work carried out at heights should be suspended wherever weather conditions pose a safety risk. It also instructed construction teams to maintain restricted areas below active work zones to prevent injuries caused by falling objects or other hazards.

BMC calls for immediate safety inspections

The BMC has directed that all workers must use prescribed personal protective equipment and fall protection measures while working at construction sites.

It has also asked developers and contractors to conduct immediate safety inspections across sites and rectify unsafe conditions without delay.

The civic body said weather conditions should be monitored continuously and suitable preventive steps should remain in place until normal conditions return.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation said all concerned agencies must treat the advisory with urgency and ensure compliance with safety norms.

The BMC added that the safety of workers, neighbouring residents and citizens remains a priority and urged all developers to follow applicable safety regulations and construction practices.
