Mumbai is set to witness another spell of intense rainfall as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for the city on Sunday, warning of heavy to extremely heavy showers along with strong winds.
According to the latest forecast, Mumbai and its suburbs are likely to experience continuous spells of rain. Very heavy rainfall is expected at several locations, while extremely heavy showers are likely at isolated places. Occasional gusty winds reaching speeds of 55-65 kmph are also expected.
The weather department's district-wise forecast placed Mumbai under a red alert, urging residents to remain cautious amid the ongoing wet spell.
Despite the delayed arrival of the monsoon this year, the city has been experiencing intense rainfall since the beginning of the week. Several locations across Mumbai recorded more than 200 mm of rainfall in the 24-hour period ending at 8 am on Sunday.
Civic officials said that despite heavy rainfall, public transport services, including suburban trains and buses, continued to operate.
According to data shared by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), the island city recorded an average rainfall of 194 mm, while the eastern and western suburbs received 217 mm and 186 mm of rainfall, respectively, between 8 am on July 4 and 8 am on July 5.
Several locations in the eastern suburbs recorded rainfall exceeding 300 mm. The highest rainfall was reported at the Building Proposal Office in Vikhroli West, which recorded 310.6 mm. Tagore Nagar Municipal School in Vikhroli received 301.8 mm, followed by Vikhroli Fire Station with 289.8 mm, Powai with 285.8 mm and Bhandup Complex with 274.8 mm.
In the island city, Colaba Pumping Station recorded 306.6 mm of rainfall, followed by Malabar Hill with 288.8 mm, Mandvi Fire Station with 284.2 mm, Colaba with 274.8 mm and Memonwada Fire Station with 266.6 mm.
The western suburbs also witnessed heavy rainfall, with Andheri Fire Station recording 255.6 mm. Chakala Municipal School in Andheri received 252 mm, Jogeshwari recorded 248.2 mm, Aarey Colony in Goregaon received 247.6 mm and K West Ward Office recorded 245.2 mm.
Authorities are also monitoring tidal conditions as Mumbai continues to receive heavy rainfall. A high tide measuring 4.19 metres is expected at 3:22 pm on Sunday, followed by another high tide of 3.51 metres at 3:41 am on Monday.
Low tides are expected at 9:31 pm on Sunday with a height of 1.59 metres and at 9:05 am on Monday with a height of 1.56 metres.
Civic officials said emergency response teams are on alert to tackle rain-related incidents across the city. Residents have been advised to avoid unnecessary travel, especially during periods of intense rainfall and high tide.
Officials said the situation is being closely monitored, and necessary measures will be taken depending on rainfall intensity over the next few hours.
