The compound wall of Kaka Chawl and several sections of the adjacent Persian Apartment on Vallabhbhai Patel Road in Mumbai's Andheri (West) collapsed on Monday around 8.30 am amid heavy rain. No injuries have been reported in the incident.

According to sources, the redevelopment work is underway.

A pit had been dug for laying the foundation plinth. Continuous rainfall loosened the soil and debris around the area, which were washed away, leading to the wall's collapse.

Local activist and Persian Apartment resident Amjad Khan alleged that nearly 200 feet of the wall has collapsed. He further claimed that the builder neglected necessary precautions while digging the pit and failed to follow basic construction safety norms.

"The builder was supposed to maintain at least a 2-metre distance from the adjoining chawl and the building compound wall but that was not done," he said.

Upon receiving information, Mumbai Police, fire brigade, and officials from various departments rushed to the scene. However, no official statement has been issued yet regarding the next steps or accountability for the incident.
