A family performs the final rituals before the immersion
As many as 2889 visarjans (immersions) of the Ganesh idols were done as Mumbai marked its 1.5-day Ganesh Visarjan on Tuesday. Officials said that the immersions across the city proceeded smoothly. Of the 2889 visarjans, 25 idols were from the public Ganesh pandals, about 2834 idols were from households in the city, and 30 were Hartalika visarjans.

As per the officials, these immersions took place across the city in the artificial ponds created by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) across Mumbai.

According to Brihanmumbai Sarvajanik Ganeshotsav Samanvay Samiti Chief Naresh Dahibavkar, over 355 artificial ponds have been established this year. Last year there were 298 ponds.

The immersion of the Ganesha idol, which was installed at the mayor's residence in Byculla, took place at around 8.30 pm. Mumbai Mayor Ritu Tawde stated that this idol, crafted from Shadu clay, was immersed in an eco-friendly manner within the artificial tank constructed on the premises of the mayor's bungalow.

Artificial ponds help prevent pollution in natural water bodies like beaches, lakes, and rivers. Bombay High Court directives mandate that idols under six feet should be immersed in these artificial setups. Devotees have also been urged to use eco-friendly clay idols and natural paint instead of the usual PoP idols.
