In a bid to increase enrolment in civic-run Marathi medium schools across Mumbai, Education Committee Chairperson Rajashree Shirwadkar has proposed setting aside Rs 35 lakh in the education budget.

The proposed fund will be used to provide an allowance to students studying in Marathi schools, similar to the financial assistance currently provided to female students. Officials believe the initiative could help encourage more parents to admit their children to Marathi medium institutions run by the civic body.

Key issues raised in education budget meeting

The proposal was discussed during the education budget meeting held on Tuesday, where several other measures related to school infrastructure and student welfare were also highlighted.

Among the key issues raised were the installation of CCTV cameras in suburban schools run by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), ensuring the presence of counsellors in schools to support students' mental well-being, and allocating funds for minor repair works in school buildings.
