Late on Saturday night, mid-day received a snake rescue call from Mumbai's Aarey Colony. What appeared to be a routine rescue turned alarming when a highly venomous Russell's viper was found tucked behind a slipper. If unnoticed, the snake could have delivered a potentially fatal bite. Experts say Russell's vipers are masters of camouflage and often take shelter in cool, dark corners, shoes and slippers being common hiding spots.
The likelihood of encountering snakes in residential areas increases during the monsoon, as waterlogged habitats and overflowing nullahs drive them to seek dry shelter. This makes it essential to stay cautious, always check your footwear, keep your surroundings clean and clutter-free, and never attempt to handle a snake yourself. Call trained rescuers for help, and in case of a bite, seek immediate medical attention.
Incidents like this serve as a vital reminder of the importance of awareness and vigilance, especially during the monsoon and in areas close to natural habitats. A bit of caution and preparedness can go a long way in ensuring safety.
