India finishes seventh at International Mathematical Olympiad 2026

Separately, the Indian team delivered a strong performance at the 67th International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) 2026 held in Shanghai, China, winning two gold and four silver medals.

India secured an unofficial seventh position among 117 participating countries. A total of 666 students competed in this year's event, making it the largest International Mathematical Olympiad since the competition began in 1959.

The result continues India's strong run at the Olympiad. Since 2019, Indian teams have won at least one gold medal at every edition except the 2020 Olympiad, when India did not participate because of the pandemic. Of India's 25 gold medals since its debut in 1989, 14 have been won in the last seven editions.

The seventh-place finish marks the fourth time India has achieved this ranking at the IMO, matching its performances in 1998, 2001 and 2025. India's best-ever finish remains fourth place, achieved at the 65th International Mathematical Olympiad in 2024.

This is also the fourth consecutive year that India has finished among the top 10 countries at the IMO. Since making its debut in 1989, India has recorded eight top-10 finishes in 36 appearances, excluding 2020 when it did not participate.

Overall, India has won 25 gold, 80 silver and 80 bronze medals, along with 29 honourable mentions in the history of the International Mathematical Olympiad.
