The incident occurred around 10 am at building no 36 in Chembur
A construction accident in Subhash Nagar, Chembur, on Saturday morning claimed the life of a 55-year-old worker and left five others injured after they fell from the sixth floor of an under-construction building.
According to DCP (Zone 6) Samir Shaikh, the incident occurred around 10 am at building no. 36. The workers were constructing a parking loft wall on the sixth floor when six of them fell.
The deceased has been identified as Ramanejenellu Hanumanta Deshpogu, 55. Among the injured workers, Gunadhar Rai, 22, was admitted to the ICU with serious injuries. The other injured - Kush Rai, 30; Vijay Kumar Mewalal Maurya, 35; Sandip Rai, 27; and Ramesh Rai, 25 - are undergoing treatment at Rajawadi Hospital. Some of them have sustained multiple fractures and internal injuries.
No FIR has been registered yet. Mumbai Police cordoned off the area and initiated an investigation to ascertain the exact cause of the fall. Police are examining whether safety protocols were followed at the site. "As of now, it's unclear how the fall happened. If this is negligence caused by the supervisors or the contractor, they will be booked," said an officer.
Mumbai Mayor Ritu Tawde on Saturday visited the site and said the BMC would take strict action if negligence was found.
