A speeding Hyundai Creta caused a major accident on the Jogeshwari-Vikhroli Link Road (JVLR) near Mahatma Phule Nagar in Powai on Sunday evening, injuring four people.
According to police, the car, which was heading towards the Eastern Express Highway, first hit a motorcycle and then rammed into pedestrians before fleeing the spot without assisting the injured. The accused driver, identified as 19-year-old college student Vishal Sindhu, was later apprehended, and further legal action is underway.
The incident took place at around 7:15 pm within the jurisdiction of the Powai Police Station. Officials said an FIR is being registered against the accused for rash driving and causing injuries.
Senior PI Jitendra Sonawane said, "The car driver is a student. We have taken him into custody. The accused driver hit pedestrians with his car, and all injured persons were admitted to hospital. We have conducted a blood test and are awaiting the report to determine whether he was under the influence of alcohol. The process of registering an FIR is underway."
In the preliminary investigation, police found no immediate evidence that the accused was under the influence of alcohol. However, his blood samples have been sent for testing to confirm the same.
The injured have been identified as Manisha Sawant (45), a resident of Mahatma Phule Nagar, Powai, who has been admitted to Sion Hospital; Natha Sopan Pargaonkar (40); Ammachar Pande (40); and Dhanush Pande (13). All injured persons were rushed to hospital and are currently undergoing treatment.
The incident comes close on the heels of another hit-and-run case reported in Powai earlier, where a speeding vehicle knocked down three sewer workers, leaving them seriously injured, while the driver fled the scene.
