Hundreds of master's graduates at Mumbai's Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) have been left anxious after the institute announced a last-minute postponement of its convocation ceremony, which was originally scheduled to be held on August 2.
According to students, they received emails informing them that the ceremony had been postponed just days before the event, after many graduates and their families had already made travel arrangements and incurred significant expenses.
The ceremony was expected to be presided over by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant, students said.
"We are unhappy about the long distances that students and parents have had to travel ahead of the ceremony and the expenses they incurred," a master's student, requesting anonymity, told mid-day.
The uncertainty surrounding the revised schedule has added to the frustration, with students claiming that the institute has not yet communicated a fresh date for the convocation.
"Now, some of us also plan to skip the new ceremony because it won't be practical to attend again," the student added.
Students further noted that they have not been told of the new date thus far, and the monsoons have made the change especially difficult.
"While we speculate that a possibility of student protests may have led to postponement, there haven't been any signs or announcements yet," said the student. Students also stated that they have had talks with TISS officials to reach possible solutions.
Mid-day reached out to TISS for an official response regarding the postponement and the revised convocation schedule. However, no response had been received at the time of publishing the article.
