A fire broke out in an open space filled with garbage and dry leaves near Khevara Circle, in front of Wood World Furniture Shop in Manpada, Thane (West), in the early hours of Sunday, May 31, officials said.
According to the Thane Municipal Corporation Disaster Management Cell, the incident was reported at around 12:47 am by the Balkum Fire Station. Fire brigade personnel immediately responded to the call and reached the spot with one fire engine.
The fire had engulfed waste material, including dry leaves and garbage dumped in the open area. However, fire personnel managed to bring the situation under control and completely extinguished the blaze by 1:19 am.
Officials confirmed that no injuries or casualties were reported in the incident. The cause of the fire has not yet been determined, though such incidents are often linked to unattended waste burning or accidental ignition in dry conditions.
Authorities have reiterated the importance of proper waste disposal and cautioned against dumping or burning garbage in open spaces, especially during dry weather conditions.
In a separate incident on Saturday, a fire broke out at a firecracker factory in Kasganj district, leaving four labourers critically injured, police said. The incident occurred at a unit located in a forest area near Nagla Patiya under Soron police station limits. The exact cause of the fire is yet to be determined, reported PTI.
Soon after receiving information, teams from the local administration, police, and fire brigade rushed to the spot and launched rescue and firefighting operations. Firefighters managed to bring the blaze under control after sustained efforts, officials said.
Police have since cordoned off the area and deployed personnel to maintain security and prevent any further risk. The site is currently under surveillance.
All four were initially rushed to a private hospital for treatment but were later referred to Aligarh due to the seriousness of their injuries, as per the news agency.
Kasganj Superintendent of Police O P Singh said an investigation has been launched to ascertain the cause of the fire. He also noted that preliminary information suggests that children were working at the factory, and further inquiry is underway.
Authorities are examining possible safety violations and compliance lapses at the unit, as per PTI.
