Research in health technology at the University of Mumbai has received international recognition, with an innovative health monitoring device design being granted legal protection in the United Kingdom.

As per Mumbai University, the portable device has been registered under the UK Registered Designs framework, ensuring protection of its unique visual and structural features and preventing unauthorised imitation.

The university further informed that the device has been developed by a seven-member multidisciplinary research team from the University of Mumbai, led by Dr Srivaramangai Ramanujam, Head of the Department of Information Technology.

All members of the team contributed equally to the conception, design, and development of the innovation. The design falls under International Design Classification Class 24, which covers medical and laboratory equipment, strengthening its commercial and industrial potential.

The device aims at improving patient monitoring

According to the researchers, the Health Monitoring Device has been conceptualised at the intersection of healthcare technology, medical devices, and applied engineering. It is aimed at improving patient monitoring, diagnostics, and healthcare delivery through a compact and user-friendly solution suitable for hospitals, clinics, and home-care settings.

It is designed to continuously and accurately monitor vital health parameters such as heart rate, body temperature, oxygen saturation (SpO₂), and blood pressure. By enabling real-time tracking of patient data, it can help doctors and healthcare professionals detect health changes early and provide timely medical intervention.

Moreover, the technology is also aligned with the growing demand for digital health and telemedicine, allowing secure transmission of patient data for remote monitoring and consultations.

Researchers further said that it would be particularly beneficial for elderly patients, those with chronic illnesses, and individuals requiring continuous or critical care, as per the release issued by Mumbai University.

Commenting on the achievement, Dr Ramanujam said, "The recognition reflects the University of Mumbai's commitment to translational research with real-world impact."

She further added that the design registration opens avenues for technology transfer, industrial adoption, and future commercialisation.

The research team also includes Dr Neelam Sharma, Abhijeet Sudhakar, Dr Ravi Shankar Pandey, Dr Upendra Kumar, Dr Rajeev Ranjan Rai, and Dr Nitish Pathak.

Following the UK design registration, the team will focus on prototype validation, clinical or field trials, and securing patent protection for the functional aspects of the technology.

Furthermore, efforts are also underway to explore licensing opportunities with healthcare technology companies and expand protection through international patent and design filings.
