The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) on Tuesday announced a series of stringent water conservation measures amid declining reservoir levels and a delayed monsoon caused by El Nino conditions.
According to the civic body's Public Relations Department, the city currently holds only 10.35 per cent water stock in its supplying lakes as of Tuesday, raising concerns over sustained supply to Mumbai and its suburbs.
As part of precautionary steps, the BMC has already implemented a 10 per cent water cut since May 15. From Wednesday onwards, additional restrictions have come into force, including a 20 per cent reduction in water supply for industrial, commercial, and sports club establishments.
The civic body has also temporarily disconnected water connections for all ongoing construction projects and suspended approvals for new construction water supply connections.
Water supply to all swimming pools has also been halted until further notice.
Officials said the measures are aimed at ensuring drinking water availability for the city's population amid an estimated demand of 4,664 million litres per day (MLD), against a supply of around 4,100 MLD.
Strict enforcement measures have been warned against misuse or wastage of drinking water. The BMC has directed that non-drinking water sources such as borewells, wells, and tanker water be used for activities like gardening, vehicle washing, and cleaning.
Major establishments, including Central Railway, Western Railway, HPCL, BPCL, RCF, the Navy, MIDC, and BPT have been instructed to reuse treated water from sewage treatment plants (STPs) for secondary usage.
The civic body has urged citizens and institutions to cooperate with conservation efforts, warning of legal action against violators as Mumbai grapples with a looming water stress situation.
Thane Municipal Corporation announces a 24-hour water shutdown from June 18-19 due to Kalwa tunnel repair; several areas will face complete water supply disruption.
The Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) has announced a significant disruption in water supply across several parts of its jurisdiction, including Mumbra, Diva, Kalwa, Majiwada-Manpada, and Wagle (Koli division), citing Maharashtra Industrial Development-related works and technical maintenance requirements.
According to officials, repair work on the Kalwa water tunnel, as communicated by the Irrigation Department in a letter dated June 9, will be undertaken as part of scheduled maintenance.
As a result, water supply in the affected areas will be reduced by 20 per cent amid rising summer demand and increasing dependence on limited water resources.
In addition, a complete 24-hour water shutdown has been scheduled from Friday at 12 to Saturday at 12 pm for maintenance work.
During this period, water supply will remain fully suspended in Diva, Mumbra (excluding certain parts of Ward Nos. 26 and 31), all areas under Kalwa Ward Committee, as well as Rupadevi Pada, Kisanagar No. 2 and Nehrunagar under Wagle Ward Committee, along with the Kolse-Khalsa village area under Majiwada Ward Committee.
