The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Friday issued a heatwave warning for parts of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) and Maharashtra's Konkan belt, with the alert remaining in force until October 12.
The Regional Meteorological Centre in Mumbai said heatwave conditions were likely at isolated places in districts of South Konkan, while hot and humid weather was expected at isolated locations in North Konkan.
The warning comes as temperatures are set to rise across parts of Maharashtra over the next few days.
The IMD has forecast a gradual rise in maximum temperatures by 2-3 degrees Celsius in some parts of Maharashtra over the next 48 hours. Temperatures are expected to increase by a further 1-3 degrees Celsius thereafter, according to the PTI.
Maximum temperatures in parts of interior Maharashtra are likely to remain between 37 and 39 degrees Celsius on October 9 and 10, the weather department said.
The rising temperatures could add to discomfort, particularly in areas experiencing hot and humid conditions.
The Mumbai Metropolitan Region includes Mumbai and adjoining areas across Thane, Palghar and Raigad districts, with the urban agglomeration spread across nine municipal corporations.
The IMD's warning covers the coastal belt, with the nature of the expected conditions varying between South and North Konkan.
Residents are advised to keep track of official weather updates and take precautions against heat, including drinking sufficient water and limiting prolonged exposure to direct sunlight during the hottest part of the day.
Meanwhile, the IMD has issued its first heatwave warning for Mumbai and some other parts of Maharashtra following the recent withdrawal of the southwest monsoon from the state, with temperatures expected to rise in several areas over the next few days.
The IMD has warned of localised heatwave conditions in parts of coastal Maharashtra, with hot and humid weather expected in several Konkan districts over the next few days.
According to the weather bulletin issued by the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) on October 8, isolated pockets of Mumbai and Raigad are likely to experience heatwave conditions on Friday, October 9.
Meanwhile, parts of southern Maharashtra could receive light rain and thundershowers during the afternoon or evening over the weekend.
