In a decisive move to curb traffic violations and ensure commuter safety, a special enforcement drive led by Traffic DCP Navi Mumbai Tirupati Kakde resulted in action against 65 errant auto rickshaw drivers and other motorists on Friday, April 24.
The joint operation, carried out between 11:30 am and 1:00 pm, saw officials cracking down on multiple violations under the Motor Vehicles Act, including improper parking, refusal of fares, and flouting of basic traffic norms. The sudden inspection created a sense of urgency among drivers, many of whom were seen scrambling to comply with regulations.
During the drive, authorities identified two auto rickshaws operating without valid fitness certificates. Both vehicles were immediately seized. Officials stressed that such lapses pose a serious risk to passenger safety and must be dealt with strictly.
The operation was conducted under the supervision of senior officials, with traffic police personnel working in coordination with Regional Transport Office (RTO) teams to ensure smooth execution. Teams were strategically deployed across key stretches to monitor traffic and intercept violators.
Officials said the crackdown is part of a broader effort to bring discipline among auto rickshaw drivers and improve overall traffic management in Navi Mumbai.
"Strict action will continue against those violating rules. Passenger safety and smooth traffic flow remain our priority," an officer said.
Commuters have frequently raised concerns over reckless driving, overcharging, and non-adherence to rules by some auto drivers. Authorities believe such targeted drives will act as a deterrent and encourage better compliance.
The administration has reiterated that similar surprise checks will be conducted regularly, sending a clear message that violations will not be tolerated.
