Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis announced that the newly inaugurated Tardeo-Nagpada flyover in Mumbai Central railway station will be named after Ahilyabai Holkar, also known as Punyashlok Rajmata Ahilyadevi Holkar, an official statement said on Thursday.
The Chief Minister made the announcement at the inauguration ceremony of the reconstructed bridge, organised by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC).
CM Fadnavis said that maintaining quality while completing development works quickly is the state government's top priority. He praised the BMC for completing the bridge reconstruction in just 15 months - four months ahead of schedule.
The 130-year-old bridge had exceeded its lifespan and was crucial for traffic movement in the area.
The Chief Minister congratulated civic officials and engineers for finishing the work within the stipulated time.
He also said that around six more bridges in Mumbai are nearing completion and are expected to be inaugurated in the next two to three months.
Announcing the naming decision, CM Fadnavis said that Ahilyadevi Holkar remains an example of ideal governance. He highlighted her administrative skills, commitment to public welfare, law and order, and her work in building temples, ghats and promoting small industries.
He said naming the bridge after her would be a matter of pride and would inspire both the state government and the civic body to continue working with dedication.
Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde attended the ceremony virtually. He said the bridge would greatly benefit citizens and ease traffic in the area.
Shinde added that several pending projects across the state have been completed at a faster pace under the present government and expressed confidence that the BMC would continue delivering quality infrastructure works for Mumbaikars.
Several dignitaries, including Legislative Council Chairman Ram Shinde and BMC Commissioner Bhushan Gagrani, were present at the event.
The new flyover design includes total length of 333 metres (138.39 m east, 157.39 m west, 36.9 m within limits), carriageway width of 7 metres and footpaths on both sides, adequate for pedestrians.
The new flyover will have re-establish east-west traffic connectivity disrupted for two years and reduce congestion on roads including Jahangir Boman Behram Marg and Dr Dadasaheb Bhadkamkar Marg, Pathe Bapurao Marg, and near Mahalaxmi station bridge.
The officials said that it will provide safer and faster commuting options for Mumbai residents.
