Numbers aren’t 'fine' at all, says BMC after collecting Rs 49 crore in fine from maskless people

Amid a steep rise in the number of COVID-19 cases in Mumbai, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) on Saturday said that it has collected about Rs 49 crore in fine from those not wearing masks in public places.

Taking to Twitter, the country's richest civic body said that more than Rs 49 crore has been collected till April 2 as fine from citizens for not wearing mask in public places across Mumbai. "These numbers aren't 'fine' at all," the BMC said in its tweet.

The civic body also urged people to mask 'up' and help them bring 'down' the COVID-19 numbers.

The Maharashtra government has increased the fine to Rs 500 from the existing Rs 200 on anyone found without a mask in public. "Any person found to be without masks shall be fined an amount of Rs 500. Any person found to be spitting in public places will be fined an amount of Rs 1000", informed Maharashtra government.

On Sunday, the state government imposed a night curfew and a blanket lockdown over weekends. The new orders named 'Break the Chain' came in force from Monday, April 5, and will stay till April 30. Only essential services will be allowed during the curfew time and weekend lockdown.
