There is good news for all those who own apartments and houses in Mumbai. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) will refund a significant amount of money to home owners, who have regularly been paying property tax so far.

The refund amounts that have been held up for almost a year, have now almost been cleared with nearly 11,000 property owners set to receive a partial refund in the coming weeks.

The question of refunds arose after it was found that several house owners had received inflated and wrong property tax bills. Since January this year, the BMC has returned around Rs 650 crore that it had collected over the past year, to more than 6000 property owners.

The confusion has its roots in the new property tax system. The new system imposed the tax with retrospective effect from April 1, 2010. But a miscalculation resulted in several owners receiving inflated bills. However, after a High Court order observed that the civic body had wrongly calculated the amounts, BMC officials started working on a new formula to submit to the court as the Standing committee rejected the earlier draft they had made.

When contacted, Ram Dhas, in charge of the refunds at BMC, said, "If any individual or housing society is yet to be paid, we will process that at the earliest. The new formula for property tax however, is still being worked on."
