The family of slain Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Pradeep Purnekar has demanded a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into his murder, citing fears of local political interference in Maharashtra's Thane city.
Purnekar's family met visiting BJP leaders, including MLA Sanjay Kelkar and MLC Niranjan Davkhare, on Friday, urging them to arrange an urgent meeting with Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis to ensure a fair investigation free from political pressure.
Opposition parties on Saturday announced a protest march to the Thane Police Commissionerate on October 9 to highlight the deteriorating law and order situation in Thane in the wake of Purnekar's murder.
Opposition leaders including former MP and Sena (UBT) leader Rajan Vichare, NCP (SP) MLA Jitendra Awhad and Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) leader Avinash Jadhav along with leaders of the Congress, Aam Aadmi Party, Dharmarajya Paksha and the Republican Party of India (RPI) held a press conference and announced the protest march.
Purnekar was shot at and stabbed on the night of September 29. He was rushed to a nearby private hospital, where he succumbed during emergency treatment. The police have arrested three persons and have launched a search for two other accused.
