The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Monday retained the Rahuri Assembly seat in Maharashtra after its candidate Akshay Kardile defeated Govind Mokate of the Nationalist Congress Party (Sharadchandra Pawar) by a margin of over 1.12 lakh votes.
The bypoll to the constituency in Ahilyanagar district was necessitated following the death of Akshay Kardile's father and sitting MLA Shivajirao Kardile.
According to data from the Election Commission of India, Akshay Kardile secured 1,40,093 votes, while Govind Mokate received 27,506 votes, news agency PTI reported.
The BJP also secured a significant victory in the Umreth Assembly by-election in Gujarat, with Harshadbhai Govindbhai Parmar emerging victorious.
Parmar secured 85,500 votes, winning by a margin of 30,743 votes, according to official data from the Election Commission.
The other contenders were defeated by substantial margins. Bhrugurajsinh Chauhan of the Indian National Congress (INC) secured 54,757 votes, while Maulik Vinubhai Shah of the Bharatiya National Janata Dal (BNJD) received 773 votes.
Independent candidates Nirupaben Natvarlal Madhu (626 votes), Mahendrabhai Natvarbhai Parmar (786 votes), and Jiteshkumar Ghanshyambhai Sevak (435 votes) also registered low vote counts. The "None of the Above" (NOTA) option garnered 2,335 votes.
Parmar's victory strengthens the BJP's position in the state ahead of the upcoming elections.
In the broader context of by-elections across India, the BJP has also performed strongly in other regions. In the Northeast, the party secured wins in Nagaland's Koridang constituency, where Daochier I Imchen emerged victorious, and in Tripura's Dharmanagar Constituency, Jahar Chakraborti won the bypoll.
In Karnataka, Umesh Hullappa Meti of the Indian National Congress (INC) won the Bagalkot seat.
Meanwhile, in Maharashtra's Baramati Constituency, Maharashtra Deputy CM Sunetra Pawar of NCP has won. The party is an ally of the BJP.
Speaking about the Baramati bypoll results, Pawar on Monday expressed gratitude towards the public for supporting the party. She said that the public, through their votes, expressed faith in former Deputy CM and her late husband Ajit Pawar, who died in a tragic plane crash in Baramati in January this year.
