mid-day had reported on January 10 that an intruder had broken into the ground-floor apartment of constable Vinanti Patil, who is attached to the Navi Mumbai police commissionerate.

Vinanti and her husband Ravindra had woken up when the robber entered the house, and successfully foiled his plans. However, the man stabbed both of them in various places, due to which the couple had to be admitted to a hospital.

The accused has been identified as Ravindra Biswas (30), who stayed in Nerul gaon. Police sub-inspector Nithin Shinde from Nerul police station said, "Biswas originally hails from West Bengal, and shifted to Nerul five years ago.

Since then, he has been doing odd jobs and also stealing valuables. He has been staying in Nerul gaon with one of his female friends." Police said that after entering the society premises in Sector 6 that day, Biswas first stole Rs 10,000 from the constable's neighbours.

The family never even realised they had been robbed. "After stealing from the neighbouring house, the accused noticed the sliding window without a grill (at Patil's house). So he decided to rob from there as well.

However, after he sneaked inside, he dropped something due to which the constable woke up her husband and they attempted to catch him," added Shinde. The couple was stabbed several times, and are still admitted in Shushrusha Hospital. But they are out of danger.

The arrest
While narrowing down on housebreakers who robbed valuables with a similar modus operandi, an informer tipped them off about Biswas. "He had started working in a construction site recently, so we visited the site and asked the supervisor whether he was present there on January 9 (the day of the robbery).

We then brought him to the police station on suspicion, and he confessed to his crime during investigation," said Jagvendra Singh Rajput, assistant police inspector, Nerul police station. With his arrest yesterday, police have solved two more robberies registered with them in 2010 and 2011 respectively.

Police have recovered 38 memory cards, 7 SIM cards and Rs 20,000 in cash from him. They are yet to recover the chopper with which he assaulted the couple. Biswas has also not revealed anything about any accomplice with him that day.
