Smart electric buses equipped with AI-based integrated safety systems will soon be inducted into the fleet of the Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC), announced state Transport Minister and MSRTC Chairman Pratap Sarnaik.

He was speaking to the media during a demonstration of smart e-buses in Pune.

Sarnaik stated that the MSRTC has adopted the state government's policy of promoting electric vehicles. As part of this initiative, out of the 5,000 new self-owned buses planned in the future, a minimum of 1,000 buses per year will be electric.

He emphasised that these e-buses must be equipped with AI-based integrated safety systems, and the manufacturing companies have been directed accordingly.

A demonstration of such smart e-buses, already built for the Uttar Pradesh Transport Corporation, was showcased.

The new e-buses will include AI-enabled CCTV cameras that monitor driver behaviour. If the driver yawns or uses a mobile phone while driving, the system will alert passengers and trigger a danger alarm. Additionally, considering women's safety, two CCTV cameras will also monitor passenger movements.

Sarnaik highlighted that the buses will be equipped with a foam-based fire extinguishing system to quickly control sudden fire incidents.

Furthermore, referring to the Swargate incident, he mentioned that the new smart e-buses will have systems to prevent unauthorised access when the bus is parked and locked. Any such attempt will trigger a danger alarm, enhancing overall security.
