A 77-year-old woman died after allegedly losing her balance and falling from the balcony of her apartment on the 21st floor of a residential tower in Thane West on Wednesday afternoon.
The woman was identified as Kumudha Ramesh Shetty. The incident occurred at around 3.45 pm at Savana Tower, located near Vasant Lawns, opposite New Horizon School, in the Majiwada area.
Shetty allegedly lost her balance and fell from the balcony of flat number 2101 on the 21st floor, landing on the podium level of the building.
Following the incident, personnel from the Vartak Nagar Police Station, the Thane Fire Brigade, and the Disaster Management Cell rushed to the spot with a fire engine, a rescue vehicle, a utility vehicle, an ambulance, a hearse van, and a hydraulic rescue vehicle.
Fire brigade personnel and disaster management officials retrieved the woman's body from the podium and handed it over to the Vartak Nagar police.
The body was subsequently sent to the District Civil Hospital in Thane for post-mortem examination and further legal formalities.
Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident. No foul play has been reported so far.
Last month, a 12-year-old boy died and two other people were injured after part of a house collapsed in Maharashtra's Thane district.
The incident took place at 3.35 pm on July 10 at Madras Chawl, near Missionary Chapel Church in Azad Nagar, Brahmand, Thane West.
According to officials, a section of the gallery of a ground-plus-one-storey house, estimated to be 25 to 30 years old, collapsed onto a neighbouring house.
Three members of a family were inside the affected house and were reportedly sleeping when the structure fell, trapping and injuring them.
The injured were taken to nearby hospitals for treatment.
A 35-year-old woman suffered a head injury and is undergoing treatment at Titan Hospital.
A nine-year-old boy also sustained a head injury and is receiving treatment at the same hospital.
A 12-year-old boy suffered serious injuries and was taken to the Civil Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
