A ticketless passenger allegedly pushed and assaulted a railway ticket checker (TC) while attempting to flee after being caught travelling without a ticket on a Mumbai suburban train.
The incident took place on August 18, when the ticket checker, Prakash Dubey was on duty from 2 pm to 10 pm on the Virar-Dadar route.
Dubey, while briefing about how he was assaulted, said, "I was travelling in a second-class coach of a Dadar-bound local when he found a passenger travelling without a valid ticket at around 6:40 pm. The passenger was asked to pay the prescribed fine."
"However, the passenger allegedly objected and claimed that the staffer was asking him for a ticket. When the train reached Andheri station, the passenger allegedly got down and attempted to flee," he added.
Dubey followed him and tried to stop him but the passenger allegedly pushed the ticket checker, attempting to escape. During the fiasco, Dubey fell down on the platform. "I fell down as soon as he pushed me, and injured my left eye," he added.
"Meanwhile, senior staff member Ganesh Rokde, who was present at the spot, took the passenger to the ticket-checking office at Andheri station," Dubey said.
Dubey, who had suffered injuries during the incident, informed the Station Master and visited the dispensary, stating that he was in considerable pain and bleeding, and suffered an injury above his left eye.
The passenger was later taken to the Government Railway Police (GRP) at Andheri, where further action was initiated.
The incident highlights the risks faced by railway ticket-checking and enforcement personnel while carrying out checks against ticketless travel on Mumbai's suburban railway network.
