Thane BJP MLA Sanjay Kelkar has criticised the city's civic administration over what he described as unplanned urban development and worsening water supply issues, as per PTI reports.
Speaking to reporters after an event in Thane on Saturday, Kelkar questioned the Thane Municipal Corporation's decision to grant permissions for numerous skyscrapers despite the city facing infrastructure challenges.
The Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC), currently governed by the BJP-Shiv Sena alliance, has allegedly failed to ensure basic amenities for the 27 lakh residents in the city, he said.
Kelkar blamed poor planning for the city's current civic woes and said rapid vertical development was putting increasing pressure on existing infrastructure.
How are permissions being granted for high-rise buildings without guaranteeing adequate water supply? the MLA questioned while expressing concern over the strain on resources caused by unchecked construction activity.
He said residents across Thane continue to face water-related difficulties even as new residential towers continue to come up in different parts of the city.
The BJP legislator also highlighted the absence of a dedicated dam project for Thane, despite the municipal corporation being in existence for 43 years straight, as per the news agency.
Apart from infrastructure concerns, Kelkar accused the civic administration of ignoring environmental considerations while approving projects. He called for an immediate review of ongoing and proposed developments to ensure sustainable growth and better civic planning.
His remarks come amid increasing public concern over water shortages, traffic congestion and pressure on urban infrastructure in rapidly expanding parts of Thane.
Earlier this week, amid ongoing concerns over Thane's water infrastructure, several parts of the city faced a temporary water shutdown for maintenance work.
The Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) implied a 24-hour water supply disruption at 12 pm on May 7 and continue until 12 pm of May 8, due to urgent repair and upgradation of Barvi gravity pipelines at the Jambhul Water Treatment Plant.
Supply remained suspended in parts of Diva, Mumbra (excluding select wards 26 and 31) and Kalwa. TMC also warned that low water pressure may continue for up to two days after restoration, till 10th May.
Residents were advised to store water in advance and use it carefully during the maintenance period.
