A woman identified as Dolly Sahu was allegedly assaulted and threatened by a male passenger, Mohd Rizwan Ansari, 36, inside a general compartment of a Goregaon-CSMT local train. A video of the August 5 incident has gone viral, triggering outrage on social media.
Police said both the accused and the victim have been traced and questioned. An FIR has been registered at Andheri Railway police station under Section 74 (assault or use of criminal force against a woman with intent to outrage her modesty) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.

According to police, the accused claimed the woman was sleeping on a seat when he boarded the train and was looking for a place to sit. He alleged that he politely asked her to make space, after which an argument broke out and later turned into a physical altercation.
The incident came to light after videos recorded by an eyewitness were shared on Instagram. The account holder claimed the incident took place at around 5.35 pm on Goregaon-CSMT local train No. 98760.
According to the eyewitness, the accused became aggressive after an argument, allegedly slapped the woman twice, and later took off his belt to threaten her while fellow passengers remained mute spectators.
"I was travelling in the ladies' first-class coach while he was in the adjoining general compartment. He was extremely aggressive and full of rage. Even people around him were afraid to intervene," the eyewitness wrote in one of the Instagram posts.
The eyewitness also alleged that she repeatedly alerted the police while the incident was unfolding.
"I informed the police, but instead of sending someone to help, they kept calling me repeatedly and asking questions while the assault was still happening. No immediate action was taken," the eyewitness alleged. She further claimed she called the police around 30 times before approaching Wadala police station to lodge a complaint.
A Wadala police officer told mid-day, that the complaint was later transferred to Andheri GRP. Officials said they traced both parties and arrested the accused within 12 hours. He has been detained and will be produced before the court on August 8.
