Work on the Thane Coastal Road-1 has crossed the 40 per cent completion mark within 14 months, with construction progressing rapidly across the 13.45-km corridor, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) said on Wednesday.
Foundation work, pier construction, pier-cap casting and I-girder erection are advancing at several locations along the project.
As of September 2, around 40 per cent of the overall project had been completed.
Construction teams have completed 332 of the 426 working piles, taking progress on piling work to around 77 per cent.
Work on the piers has also moved ahead, with 277 of 426 piers, or around 65 per cent, completed.
A total of 460 pier caps have already been cast as part of the elevated road structure.
I-girder erection has also gathered pace.
So far, 501 of the planned 1,632 I-girders have been erected, representing around 30 per cent of the total.
Construction teams have also completed 13 deck-slab spans.
The Thane Coastal Road-1 is a 13.45-km, six-lane, access-controlled greenfield corridor connecting Kharegaon Toll Naka and Gaimukh.
The project is being built using several advanced engineering techniques. It will be the first greenfield road project in India to use a single-pile, single-pier system with monopile foundations on land, according to the project authorities.
The corridor is being developed as a strategic freight route aimed at reducing congestion on Ghodbunder Road and improving connectivity between NH-160, the Mumbai-Nashik Highway, and Gaimukh along the Thane Creek coastline.
A major portion of the route will run on elevated viaducts and bridges, helping protect the area's sensitive mangrove ecosystem.
The project is expected to provide faster and safer connectivity for traffic travelling towards Thane, Nashik, Bhiwandi, Gujarat and North India.
The project includes a 240-metre creek bridge and an 8.11-km elevated road passing through mangrove areas.
A 40 to 45-metre-wide Development Plan (DP) road has also been reserved for the project. This is expected to help separate local traffic from inter-city traffic on Ghodbunder Road.
At Gaimukh, the road will directly connect with the upcoming Gaimukh-Fountain Hotel Tunnel.
The two projects are expected to improve connectivity between Thane and Bhayander while further reducing pressure on Ghodbunder Road.
Together, they are also expected to strengthen freight movement towards Wadhawan Port, JNPT, South Maharashtra and Karnataka.
Thane Coastal Road-1 is also expected to connect with several future infrastructure projects, including the Thane Ring Metro, Thane Coastal Road-2, Saket-Amane Elevated Corridor and Kasarvadavali-Kharbhav Road.
Once integrated, these projects are expected to form an important part of Thane's future transport network regarding which state's transport minister had also recently held a meeting, officials said.
