A landslide struck a stretch of the busy Ghodbunder Road in Maharashtra's Thane city, with soil and heavy stones falling onto the roadside near a residential complex, officials said on Tuesday.
No casualties were reported in the incident, which took place on Monday evening, they said.
A large quantity of soil and heavy stones collapsed onto the public road margin adjacent to a residential complex in Bhayandarpada, according to Thane's Regional Disaster Management Cell (RDMC).
RDMC chief Yasin Tadvi said the debris fell onto the roadside area, prompting an immediate response from emergency teams to prevent the incident from affecting traffic movement on the busy arterial road.
The landslide occurred amid wet conditions in the city, with officials taking precautions to prevent further risks to commuters and pedestrians in the area.
The emergency control room received information about the landslide at around 8.40 pm on Monday, Tadvi said.
Emergency personnel were deployed to the site soon after the incident was reported. Officials focused on clearing the debris from the road margin and ensuring that traffic on Ghodbunder Road was not disrupted.
Earth excavators were brought in to remove the rocks and soil that had fallen onto the roadside.
The debris clearance operation was completed without any reported casualties or major disruption to traffic movement.
The excavators removed the accumulated soil and stones from the affected stretch, allowing traffic to move normally.
The response was carried out quickly because Ghodbunder Road is an important arterial route connecting several parts of Thane and is used by a large number of commuters throughout the day.
Officials said the immediate priority was to clear the affected area and prevent the debris from creating a traffic hazard.
Following the clearance operation, authorities cordoned off the nearby hillside area as a precautionary measure.
The restriction was imposed to keep pedestrians and commuters away from the affected section and reduce the risk of injury in case of further movement of soil or rocks.
Officials are continuing to keep an eye on the area after the landslide.
The incident has highlighted the risks posed by unstable slopes along roads in Thane, particularly during periods of heavy rainfall. While the latest landslide caused no casualties and the road was cleared promptly, authorities have maintained precautionary measures around the affected hillside.
