Continuous heavy rainfall over the last 48 hours disrupted normal life across Thane district, causing flooding in several areas, tree falls and structural damage incidents, officials said on Sunday.
According to the Thane Regional Disaster Management Cell (RDMC), authorities received 93 rain-related complaints in the last 24 hours. These included 24 incidents of tree falls, 22 branch falls, 24 flooding complaints, eight compound wall collapses and one landslide incident.
Several low-lying areas across Thane city, Kalyan, Bhiwandi, Ulhasnagar, Dombivli and Navi Mumbai reported flooding, affecting residents and slowing movement. Officials said emergency teams were deployed at several locations to assist citizens and respond to complaints.
The weather department has predicted heavy rainfall in the region over the next two days.
A portion of a first-floor gallery collapsed at the 45-year-old Tiwari Bhawan building in the Kisan Nagar area of Wagle Estate in Thane on Saturday night, RDMC chief Yasin Tadvi said.
Two people, identified as Noori Islam Sheikh, 65, and Suresh Thapa, 36, sustained injuries in the incident. Sheikh suffered injuries to his head and shoulder and is undergoing treatment at a local hospital.
"Following the incident, the entire building was evacuated as a safety precaution due to the precarious state of the remaining gallery structure. A family residing in the terrace flat has been shifted to a temporary civic shelter at a TMC School," Tadvi said.
Authorities cordoned off the building and evacuated residents as a precautionary measure after inspecting the condition of the remaining structure.
In another rain-related incident, a first-floor balcony slab collapsed at the five-storey Avighna Co-operative Housing Society in Shahbaz Village, Belapur, in Navi Mumbai on Saturday night.
Following the incident, all 17 flats in the building were vacated, an official from the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) said.
"No casualties were reported. The electricity supply to the building was disconnected, and the premises have been locked. A majority of the displaced residents were safely shifted to the NMMC's Warkari Bhavan in Belapur via civic buses, while others moved to relatives' homes," the official stated.
In some areas of Thane district, including parts of Ulhasnagar, residents remained stranded due to flooding for more than 48 hours. Locals raised concerns over the condition of drainage systems and claimed that inadequate pre-monsoon preparations contributed to the situation.
Officials said teams were working to clear affected areas and monitor vulnerable locations.
Thane city recorded 184.66 mm of rainfall in the 24-hour period ending at 8:30 am on Sunday. The total rainfall recorded this season has reached 948.71 mm, compared with 959.81 mm during the same period last year, Tadvi said.
Neighbouring Palghar district also witnessed continuous rainfall overnight. However, officials said there were no reports of any major damage or casualties.
District disaster management officials said the situation remains under observation as rainfall activity continues across the region.
