The Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) will implement a 10 per cent water cut across its jurisdiction every Wednesday as part of precautionary measures to manage available water stocks amid concerns over the potential impact of El Nino and the possibility of drought-like conditions.

Under the revised water management plan, supply will be suspended in several parts of Thane for 24 hours, from 9 am on Wednesday to 9 am on Thursday. The measure will be implemented through the civic body's own water supply network and STEM Water Distribution and Infrastructure Company Pvt. Ltd.

The decision follows a state government directive requiring local authorities to manage available water resources carefully and prioritise drinking water supplies amid concerns over changing weather conditions. The state government's resolution calls for planned and judicious use of water stocks across Maharashtra until August 31, 2027.

Water supply to remain suspended for 24 hours

The first scheduled shutdown will begin at 9 am on Wednesday, October 28, and continue until 9 am on Thursday, October 29. Several residential and commercial areas are expected to be affected by the disruption.

The affected areas include Ghodbunder Road, Lokmanya Nagar, Vartak Nagar, Saket, Rutu Park, Jail, Gandhi Nagar, Rustomjee, Siddhachal, Indira Nagar, Rupadevi, Shree Nagar, Samata Nagar, Siddheshwar, Eternity, Johnson, Mumbra and parts of Kalwa, among other locations.

Residents in these areas may face interruptions to their regular water supply during the shutdown period. Households and establishments that depend on the municipal network will need to plan their water use accordingly.

The civic body has advised residents to make arrangements in advance and use stored water carefully to minimise inconvenience during the scheduled disruption.

State directive focuses on water conservation

The water cut is part of a broader effort to safeguard drinking water availability in Maharashtra. The state government has directed civic bodies and other relevant authorities to plan the distribution and use of available water stocks, taking into account the potential impact of El Nino.

The state government's directive requires authorities to adopt measures aimed at reducing the risk of shortages and ensuring that available water resources are managed according to priority needs. The instructions remain in force until August 31, 2027.

Civic body urges residents to conserve water

The Thane Municipal Corporation has appealed to residents to avoid unnecessary water use and cooperate with the administration during the implementation of the weekly measure.

Residents have been advised to store only the water they need for essential household activities and avoid wastage during the period leading up to the shutdown and after supply resumes.

The civic body has also stressed the importance of using available water resources responsibly as authorities prepare for the possibility of reduced availability in the coming months.
