Thane city police in Maharashtra have announced traffic restrictions on heavy and oversized vehicles during the major Ganeshotsav 2026 immersion days to prevent congestion and ensure the smooth movement of immersion processions, officials said on Wednesday.
According to a notification issued by Thane Police Commissioner Ashutosh Dumbre, heavy and oversized vehicles will not be allowed to enter Thane city through designated routes on key immersion days.
The restrictions will be in force during the two-day, five-day, Gauri, seven-day and Anant Chaturdashi Ganesh idol immersions.
Police said the move has been taken as large numbers of devotees are expected to take part in immersion processions across the city.
The traffic restrictions will apply on September 15, 18, 19, 20 and 25, with different timings prescribed for each immersion day.
The police have identified specific routes where the entry and movement of heavy and oversized vehicles will be restricted during the prescribed periods.
Authorities said the restrictions are necessary because heavy vehicles entering or leaving the city could add to traffic congestion and obstruct Ganesh immersion processions.
Heavy and oversized vehicles will also face restrictions on other days during the Ganesh immersion period.
On these days, their movement will be restricted during the night, while vehicles will be allowed to travel during specified hours.
The police have urged vehicle operators to plan their journeys accordingly and follow the traffic instructions issued for the festival period.
The restrictions are intended to keep traffic moving and reduce the risk of delays during one of the busiest periods of the Ganesh festival.
With thousands of devotees expected on the roads for idol immersion, police officials said regulating heavy vehicle movement will help provide safer and smoother routes for processions and other road users.
