A woman passenger was injured on Thursday after falling from a crowded local train during a signal halt between Mumbra and Diva railway stations in Maharashtra's Thane district, railway police officials said.
The incident took place when the local train stopped after being held at a signal during the day. According to a statement issued by Dharmendra Vishnu Aware, senior inspector of the Thane Railway police station, the compartment was heavily crowded when the woman reportedly lost her balance and fell from the moving train, which had come to a halt.
The circumstances surrounding the fall were not immediately clear. Railway police were working to identify and trace the woman so that her statement could be recorded and the incident could be investigated further.
Officials have not yet established the exact time of the incident or confirmed the destination of the local train. Further details are expected to emerge once the woman is traced and her account is recorded by the railway police.
A video purportedly showing the incident circulated widely on social media and was also broadcast by news channels. The footage drew attention to the risks faced by passengers travelling in overcrowded suburban trains, particularly during unscheduled or signal-related halts.
Railway authorities, however, have not yet publicly confirmed all details visible in the video. The circumstances leading up to the woman's fall, including what happened inside the compartment immediately before the incident, remain part of the inquiry.
The Thane Railway police are making efforts to trace the injured passenger and record her statement. Her account is expected to help investigators establish how she came to fall from the train and whether any other factors contributed to the incident.
Officials have also not ruled out the possibility that an altercation may have preceded the fall. Central Railway's chief public relations officer said an inquiry was being conducted to determine whether the woman had faced any confrontation before she fell from the train.
"The lady had fallen down from a halted train, and had minor injuries as per available information. Inquiry is being conducted on whether the lady had faced any altercation," the CPRO said.
Central Railway officials confirmed that the woman had fallen from a train that had already come to a halt. The railway's preliminary information indicated that she suffered minor injuries, although further details about her condition were not immediately available.
The clarification is significant because the incident occurred while the train was reportedly stationary at a signal. Investigators are therefore looking into the events inside the crowded compartment and the circumstances that resulted in the passenger falling from the train.
With the woman yet to be traced, several details of the incident remain unconfirmed. These include the precise time of the fall, the local train's route and destination, and the sequence of events inside the compartment.
The railway police are expected to examine available information, including the video footage circulating online, as part of their inquiry. The woman's statement will also be important in determining whether the fall was caused solely by overcrowding or whether another incident inside the train contributed to it.
