IMD issues yellow alert for Mumbai and surrounding areas for next two days (Pic/Atul Kamble)
The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) on Wednesday issued a yellow alert for Mumbai for June 3 and June 4, warning of thunderstorms, lightning, moderate rainfall, and gusty winds.
The weather forecasting agency said that Mumbai and surrounding areas are likely to experience thunderstorms accompanied by lightning, moderate rainfall, and gusty winds reaching speeds of 40-50 kmph at isolated places across the city.
The weather department has also predicted hot and humid conditions over the next two days, with the possibility of light rain or thundershowers during the afternoon and evening hours in the neighbouring Palghar district.
For the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, Thane is likely to witness thunderstorms on Wednesday, followed by moderate rainfall and gusty winds on Thursday, according to the IMD forecast.
The warning comes after several parts of Mumbai received heavy pre-monsoon showers early Wednesday morning, leading to waterlogging and traffic disruptions in some areas.
According to rainfall data recorded between 7 am and 8 am, Mumbai's island city received 0.96 mm of rainfall, while the western suburbs recorded 9.84 mm, and the eastern suburbs received 1.25 mm.
Versova on Wednesday received the highest rainfall at 69 mm, followed by Vile Parle with 52 mm.
Andheri East received 49 mm of rainfall, while Andheri West recorded 46 mm. Other areas, such as Vile Parle, registered 33 mm, and Santacruz received 30 mm. In the eastern suburbs, Chembur recorded 12 mm of rainfall during the same period.
The intense pre-monsoon shower on Wednesday resulted in waterlogging at several low-lying locations. As per BMC, traffic movement towards the Andheri Subway was halted from 7:00 am to 8:00 am due to accumulated rainwater, prompting authorities to divert vehicles through alternative routes, including Gokhale Bridge, S.V. Road, and Thakre Bridge.
Commuters faced delays during the morning rush hour as traffic congestion built up on diversion routes. Civic officials and traffic police personnel were deployed to manage vehicular movement and monitor waterlogged spots.
The IMD has advised residents to remain cautious during thunderstorm activity, especially in open areas and near vulnerable structures.
Motorists have also been urged to drive carefully due to the possibility of reduced visibility and slippery road conditions during spells of rain.
