There are six species of flamingos in the world, and India is home to two – the greater flamingo (Phoenicopterus roseus) and the lesser flamingo (Phoeniconaias minor)

Of the thousands of flamingos that migrate to the Mumbai region each year, around 90 per cent are lesser flamingos

Lesser flamingos are smaller and more colourful than their greater counterparts

They are known for their bright pink feathers, dark beaks, and striking red eyes

Their neck curves in a J-shape. In contrast, greater flamingos are taller, with pinkish-white bodies, yellowish eyes, and S-shaped necks. They also have light pink beaks with black tips
